Edinburgh University Folk (Song) Society – 50th Anniversary Concert!
Saturday November 15th, 2008 St Brides Centre, Orwell Terrace, Edinburgh Doors (and bar) Open 7:30pm for 8pm start Tickets £10/£8 For enquiries and tickets email auldticketwife@eufolksoc.org.uk or phone 0131 258 3183 It’s 50 years since the first meeting of the Edinburgh University Folk Song Society (subsequently known as the Crown Folk Club and now EUFolkSoc). Co-founded by Hamish Henderson and Stuart MacGregor the society was one of Britain’s first folk clubs, played a key role in the revival and continues to provide a platform and meeting place for young singers and musicians from across the world. To celebrate, EUFolksoc (as part of the Carrying Stream Festival) are holding a 50th Anniversary Concert on Saturday November 15th, 2008. Venue is St Brides Centre, Orwell Terrace, Dalry, Edinburgh. After an on-the-road summer spent tracking down former members with an aging VW Golf and a seldom opened bottle of whisky, the organisers have brought together an array of people who have been mainstays of FolkSoc over the years. Their aim was to find the folk who contributed week in week out, who had the great stories about the club, and would make the event a fitting 50th celebration. Those taking the stage for a song, story or tune include: Ally Bell Jim Closs Scott Gardiner & Johnny Kemp Donald Gorman David Hamilton Ian & Gilly Hewitt Kat Jary Maria Johansen Ella Leith Bria Mason Dolina MacLennan Mark Neal Off Centre Ceilidh Band Kit Patterson Zarya Rathe David Stevenson Phil Taylor Kay Thomson After the concert (but at the same venue) there will be a dancey ceilidh (with the FolkSoc houseband Off Centre leading the playing) singaround and instrumental session.

Sounds like a great night although there's a few obvious names missing from the Crown Folk Club days whom I thought may have been asked.
I do realise, of course, that some may have been unavailable or not traced. |

| There's a 1/4 of the concert that'll be current students. We've split it into 4 sections: 50s-60s, 70s-80s, 90s and present. It's going to be amazing! |

| So how did you go about hunting down these old folksoccers? I assume that the 'obvious names' JAJ mentioned were indeed untrackable? Be interested to see how it turns out.... |

Well, some of them are quite easy to trace.
However, I've since "put my oar in"... oops, I'm mean discussed things with one of the organisers and the policy is to only feature a limited number of previous members to represent each of the sections, i.e 50s-60s, 70s-80s, 90s and present.
There's been so many people who have been involved over the years and this seems a very reasonable approach to take under the circumstances.
Of course, we could argue about who deserves to be featured or who the better ones were. However, as we all know, you just can't please everyone.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to this night very much. |

| Well I suppose anyone who wants to, featured or not, from Folksoc past or present, can take part in the session and come to the after-party.... |

| Best of luck with the gig folks, many happy returns - may it still be going as strong in another 50 years. The Garden Sessions will be there! |

I've been advised that there's not too many tickets left for this one. Possibly, no more than 25 and the capacity is around 150 although, perhaps, one of the nice EU Folk could confirm this?
Therefore, I suggest you get cracking |

Sorry to drift the thread a little, but I've been waiting to ask John or any other Auld Reekie folkie about a video I have, which was recorded direct from TV in the 1970's
The video contains songs from June Tabor, Martin Simpson,Silly Wizzard(with a skinny "Blackadder"on vocals) and a few other artists. The compere was Donnie McLeod.
The programme had been produced in a rather old looking wood lined venue.......Uni Hall or such like
Sitting in the middle of the audiance is alarge man of about 60 with a beard and thinning hair, wearing a black sweater with the words EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY FOLK SONG SOCIETY.ln big white letters
Anybody know the venue or who the old boy was? |
