Huge congratulations to Ewan Robertson! Well deserved - I did really like Ailie and the harp though.
Enjoyed the programme on Radio Scotland immensely - MAK did a great job, as usual.

| Big Congrats to Ewan and all the other finalists. I enjoyed the comp alot, however, I do have one small niggle.... it's a solo comp and fair enough competitors want a bit of backing support but I find that every year its beginning to sound like bands playing rather than soloists. Don't get me wrong the accompanists do a great job but does anyone think that it should be limited to a competitor + 1? Just a thought, I'd be interested to hear what everyone else thinks. |

I agree the music was very good - well done to all the finalists.
What did you find that smacked as 'kid-on', or 'kow-towing'? I listened, and cannot relate your comments to what I heard. I find your comment about a BBC senior executive surprising ... which one are your referring to as having made this comment about Gaelic? And are you sure that your sources are reliable?

| I agree Mairi, I really enjoyed the program. Can't say I thought it was patronising at all. |

| I must admit that I was a bit disappointed with the first three or four finalists - surprisingly lacklustre. Amy Lord was my choice but then I prefer singers to instrumentalists. She was in great voice and it is a shame that she didn't make it. |

Every finalist this year was deserving of their place this year, and I will be honest and say that there have been years when that wasn't the case for me. From a harpie point of view, I thought Ailie was magnificent - she was quite something and her slow air to die for and rock solid technique were just some of the lovelinesses to be had there. Ewan is a Highland gentleman and a real musician and his presence in the hall, his delivery, rapport with the audience, and not least his understated but spot on backing of the final whistle set showed his abilities as a guitarist and accompanist as much as an up front soloist. I would not have liked to have been one of the judges this year - but I reckon he will be a great ambassador for Scots trad music at home and abroad, and that he is one of the young musicians who knows - and respects - where he comes from as well as where he's headed.

I did not hear the programme, however for once I agree with one of those silly competitions. There are very many on the scene calling themselves musicians to-day and ruining good music, when there are buskers that have more in their pinkie than those I think of. Ewan Roberston however has stood out for me over the last couple of years, he is a guitarist with an astounding talent, his balance from sensitivity to power playing is superb. ALSO the most important, he plays correct chords, and his accompaniment is head and shoulders above anyone in his genre for his age group to-day.
Bloody well done and absolutely deserved.

Boula, you can listen again here if you want - I will be doing that myself tomorrow, and am looking forward to it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/scotland_aod.shtml?scotland/feature3_sun |

the men who sail west - Don't let any facts get in the way of your ire. Ms Fabiani "once a year ministerial visit" according to you. She was at Lorient (nice one), Bathgate on a Tuesday evening in September for the Young Trad Tour 2007, Dundee on a Saturday in September for Fest'n'Furious, STMA in Fort William at the start of December, Duan Nollaig on the 19th December in Glasgow, and Young Musician last night. She is both enthusiastic and knowledgable about trad music. Apologise, or we'll kidnap you and leave you in Arbroath - try sailing west from there. |

| Careful Partanface. There are some who will interpret your list of Ms Fabiani's engagements as proof that she wastes taxpayers' money on excessive jollies. |

I really enjoyed the awards. The concert was a great mix of instruments and styles (surprisingly no fiddle for a change) and all the musicians played really well. Ewan Robertson was a great winner and will take on the responsibilities of the Award through to 2009. The application closing date for the 2009 event is Friday 4th July. The application forms will be ready in March.
Shona's point is interesting. I think the use of accompanists has changed over the years and for the first time this final everybody used piano and most of them used guitar. It is usually the other way around unless the musician is playing solo. I'm not sure what the answer is and whether cutting down the accompanists is the way to go. I remember a few years back we applauded the maturity of the musicians who decided to use both accompanists at once as it was new then. Someone else said to me at the weekend that they really liked the musicians using all the backers as it was then they could compare all the performers easier. |

There is a risk that the performance of the accompanist(s) might distract the attention (for good or ill) away from the main performer, compensate for any short comings or (vice versa) detract from a really good performance.
Of course, a good judge should be able to allow for this although it's not always easy. |

Here's some interesting thoughts on the young trad award in the Herald blog.
