    Common Ground Scotland: 3rd - 10th August 2008

Common Ground, Scotland is a Summer School for The Traditional Arts. It is much more than a series of workshops, or masterclasses, or concerts, or dances, or festival - although it will be all of these and more. Tutors, performers and participants will come from both sides of the Atlantic, giving people the opportunity to learn about their cultures both on their home ground and as visitors from a related tradition - the best of Scottish fiddle music alongside the Old Time Music of Appalachia being just one example.

Some people will see Common Ground as a festival, though it will be more relaxed and less pressured than the normal hectic routine of a festival. Others may see it as a real learning opportunity or a source of inspiration for the long winter nights of practice on their instrument. Others may see it as a great holiday with plenty of interesting things on the menu. Others will see it as a place to make friendships that span national and cultural divides. However you view it, it will be an opportunity to meet people with similar interests and to share a wonderful week where music and the arts will be the 'Common Ground'.

2008: 3rd - 10th August 2008: We anticipate that Common Ground Scotland will again be part of 'Summer Schools @ Glaisnock' in 2008 and that the venue will be Glaisnock House, near Cumnock. At the end of the week of Common Ground workshops there is a Weekend Festival. Although most of the participants of the workshops week stay on for the final weekend - we welcome new people who either can't commit the time to the whole 8 days of events, or who just want to experience the flavour of Common Ground in a mopre typical festival weekend format. The Common Ground Festival Weekend has a strong Scottish flavour but it will not be exclusively Scottish nor will the focus be exclusively on traditional music.

    2006:  COMMON GROUND FESTIVAL WEEKEND : 5th - 7th August 2006:

The Common Ground Festival Weekend follows on from the Summer School for the traditional arts of the same name running during the previous week. At the end of the week of Common Ground workshops there is a Weekend Festival. At the first Common ground Scotland in 2002 this was called The National Folk Festival, Scotland. In 2003 our primary focus was on developing Common Ground and the weekend festival in effect became The Common Ground Festival Weekend. This focus on Common Ground, both in tuition and performance, will continue in 2005.

The traditional music content of Common Ground has been, and will continue to be, very significant. There will be a strong Scottish flavour to the event but it will not be exclusively Scottish nor will the focus be exclusively on traditional music.

Common Ground Scotland University Campus Ayr, Ayrshire. The facilities there are superb and we will have access to some excellent technical facilities within their School of Music and Media. Many of our classes will be in the splendour of the Ayrshire Management Centre which is surrounded by parkland and is just a couple of minutes walk from the accommodation and refectory.

There will be a full programme of concerts, ceilidhs and sessions throughout the Festival Weekend at University Campus Ayr and at some venues within the town of Ayr.
