3D Secure is a new technical standard developed by Visa and MasterCard to further secure CNP transactions over the Internet and often appears as a pop up box when you are trying to pay for an item. You will not see this on Foot Stompin' but it might come up when you leave our site to pay for you purchase through Worldpay.
MasterCard brand their system as 'MasterCard SecureCode' and Visa call theirs 'Verified by Visa'. Both are available through WorldPay. (Maestro cards are also supported through the MasterCard service).
3D Secure creates what is called a 'trust chain' throughout the transaction, shifting the liability for fraud from the merchant to the card issuer under a range of conditions.
When you leave Foot Stompin' and go to Worldpay the 3D Secure will sometimes appear (depending on your card issuer) as a pop up and will ask you to register. This is not a virus and is something that will come in more and more. Think of it as chip and pin for the internet.
Once you've registered and created your own private SecureCode (Mastercard version), you will be automatically prompted by your card issuer to type in your SecureCode each time you make a purchase at participating online stores/retailers. Then your SecureCode will be quickly confirmed by your card issuer to complete your purchase. Your SecureCode will never be shared with the store/retailer and using it is as easy as entering your PIN at an ATM.
Entering this code correctly during a purchase at a participating online store/retailer, confirms that you are the authorised cardholder. If an incorrect SecureCode is entered, the purchase will not be completed. Even if someone knows your credit or debit card number, the purchase cannot be completed without your SecureCode at a participating store/retailer.
A new website Shopsafeonline has been recently launched (Nov 2007) which provides you with more detailed information on Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode: secure services that make shopping online safer.
