Shot in colour over a period of 6 years starting in 1958, often from the dizzy heights of the Forth Road Bridge, The Long Span features all stages in the construction of the Forth Road Bridge and approach roads. The bridge, which is adjacent to the iconic Forth Rail Bridge spans the Firth of Forth, connecting the capital city Edinburgh at South Queensferry to the Kingdom of Fife at North Queensferry. The bridge replaced a centuries-old ferry service to carry cars, cyclists, and pedestrians across the Forth. The film, which includes considerable technical detail, tells the full story of the creation of this marvel of engineering.
The DVD also includes Forth Islands, the history and flora and fauna of Inchgarvie, Inchmickery, Inchkeith, Inchcolm, the Bass Rock and the Isle of May, filmed by Brian Cairney. Over the centuries the islands have give sanctuary to many species of birds and wildlife and known Kings, Queens, Smugglers, Saints and made political and maritime history.
