In Castles Of Scotland - Volume 2 we visit Castle Levan, Glamis Castle, Fort George and Caerlaverock Castle.
Castle Levan, overlooking the banks of the River Clyde is a medieval castle built around 1430, it has views of the Firth of Clyde from the battlements and is the starting point for the Highlands and the Western Isles. At first sight it appears to be a romantic 16th century town house but the present structure started as a massive 14th century tower that was later extended in the 15th century.
Glamis Castle in Angus, one of the most famous and haunted in Scotland, has been the family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne since 1372 when Sir John Lyon was granted the thaneage of Glamis by King Robert II. Fort George on the south side of the Moray Firth is a considerable fortress accommodating 2000 men was built after the Jacobite rising of 1745. Once a formidable fortress and still a magnificent ruin, Caerlaverock Castle, about 7 miles from the town of Dumfries, was built around 1277. By 1300 it was besieged by Edward I during his war against the Scottish king John (Balliol), a war still remembered for the brave resistance put up by the Scots under Sir William Wallace.
