Traditional Shetland Songs
by
Elizabeth Morewood
Traditional Shetland Songs: Elizabeth Morewood of Mid Yell has been collecting the traditional songs of Shetland because she was concerned that, as years passed, they were becoming unknown. To ensure that those songs do not get forgotten and lost forever she recorded them on CD at Dave Sinton’s studio in Haroldswick. To date she has recorded 23 songs from areas such as Yell, Unst, Bressay and Fetlar. On this charming but important CD Elizabeth sings the songs unaccompanied - there is a bit of traditional fiddle included here and there but it is the old songs such as "In a Moarnin o Mey-o (Unst version)", Whaar Sall Wir Peerie Hinnie lie", Baa-loo baa-lilli (Bressay Cradle Song) which linger longest in the mind. There is an accompanying booklet with the song-words and some Shetland word explanations!
