    Thunderstruck

    by Gordon Duncan

Gordoin Duncan is quite simply the finest piper of his generation. A brilliant technician as well as a fine composer, this long awaited album features 13 sets which include not only traditional tunes like The Inverness Gathering, The Old Woman's Dance & Because He Was A Bonnie Lad but also many of Gordon's own compositions including The Trip to Moredo and the seminal Andy Renwick's Ferret. A real treat for fans of exemplary piping and then some!

Musicians: Gordon Duncan - Highland Pipes, Tony McManus - Guitars, Neil Fergusson - Bouzoukie, Ewan Vernal - Bass Guitar, John Scullion - Snare Drum.

    Media Reviews

Besides the technical and critical superlatives that routinely attend his name, Gordon Duncan is regularly labelled in piping circles as 'innovative', even 'avant garde'......

........This might lead non-bagpipe specialists to anticipate something other than the largely unadulterated sound of the Highland pipes featured on his third album, periodically and sparingly accompanied with guitar, bouzouki, bass and (on the dazzling final track) snare-drum.

Duncan's adventurousness , however, lie less in fusion-style experiments than in his bold handling of variations and ornamentation, together with his compositional flair. The latter trait is outstandingly illustrated here in the sultry tonalities and complex Balkan rhythms of The Belly Dancer, or the Spanish-accented Mercedes Trujillo set.

Opening with a solo, ‘straight’ all-traditional march set, the Paganini of the pipes is soon reeling out his own jig compositions......

.........bending notes, pushing rhythms and firing of bursts of high ‘A’ as his thumb helicopters over the back hole of the chanter. Duncan has matured into an inspiring and innovative composer, as these tunes testify. With occasional guest bass, bouzouki and snare, and his own guitar up-front in a few tracks, Tony McManus produced this latest Duncan opus which is all grace notes and danger.
