In many parts of Scotland the melodeon remains as a very popular instrument, achieving almost cult status! This double CD was originally two cassettes which were first released in the 1990s. Uncluttered, clear, skilful - melodeon fans will be impressed.
CD1 features a fine recording of two melodeons, one leading played by Bill Stuart and the other harmonising, played by Lena Garden. This creates a unique sound. The clarity and sweetness of tone, along with Bill and lena's hearfelt interpretations of the tunes produce an 'awfy fine soond' - surely the basis of all good music. Both Bill and Lena play at functions and have won melodeon competitions all over the north-east. Such is the demand that they are often out 'echt nichts a wik'.
CD2 is the melodeon & piano combination of Fred Davidson and Margaret Smith who are from Banchory. Fred was a late starter to the melodeon not beginning until his late forties but eventually reaching a standard of perfection and virtuosity which is the envy of many of his fellow musicians. All this he achieved through sheer hard work and perseverance and a deal of encouragement from the great Bill Smith, late secretary of the Banchory Strathspey and Reel Society whose wife Margaret accompanies Fred on piano.
