John Mulhearn - The Extraordinary Little Cough: 'The Extraordinary Little Cough' is the result of a childhood spent touring around Scotland's Highland games circuit as a solo piper, coupled with years of interest in exploring different sounds. The tracks are all based around traditional Scottish and Irish pipe tunes (with one exception) and try to use those melodies, and the stories associated with them, to create something new - using electronics, samples, found sound, voice and instruments not commonly heard in traditional music. Drawing influence from such diverse artists as Bjork, Martyn Bennett, Allan MacDonald, Four Tet and Beck, The Extraordinary Little Cough is an honest attempt to experiment with the boundaries of traditional music.
"John Mulhearn is an artist, but rather than paint and brushes, he uses rhythmic samples and melody to create canvases of sound which unveil a cinematic picture in the mind of the listener... careful listening will be rewarded with little gems of art which are the work of considerable talent." John Slavin - Piping Today
