    The Day Dawn

    by Boys of the Lough
    Bookmark and Share

This CD has the Celtic traditions of midwinter as its theme and in many ways it could be called  folk music's answer to a Christmas CD. There are some beautiful tracks including The Christ Child's  Lullaby and a wonderful version of Christmas Day In the Morning. The title track Da (The) Day Dawn is based on an old Shetland fiddle tune of the same name, which was traditionally played at the Winter Solstice to mark the dawn of the lengthening days. The musicianship is of course superb given the stature of the line-up -  Aly Bain (fiddle), Cathal McConnell (flute, whistles, song), Dave Richardson (concertina, mandolin, cittern, accordion) ,Christy O'Leary (uillean pipes, whistles, song) and the guest musicians which include guitarist Chris Newman and pianist Henning Sommerro. A special mention for Dave Richardson's lovely  "Mid Winter Waltz".

(NEW) Boys of the Lough - the day dawn
    Michael Gale

As an American seeking the essence of the Christmas without the over-the top typical rubbish, this music tounchs the ancient core of the season. I'm getting more to give them away, what a fine gift. Please let the Boys know I find this LP as good as any, ever!!
