In 1988 accordionist Phil Cunningham worked on a series of six television shows with Shetland fiddler Aly Bain for Channel Four, and this was the beginning of what has now become a well known performing partnership. As individuals, both musicians are acknowledged masters so their duo work is a real treat for anyone lucky enough to see their shows. They have recorded several fine albums together and this latest "best of" CD is a treasure chest which should delight anyone who appreciates the richness and variety of Scotland's traditional tune heritage and just loves to hear it played by the very best musicians in the business. prime material drawn from their previous albums together, and reminds us just why they remain such a popular draw on the touring circuit.
PRETTY much self-recommending. The music on this disc covers the full range of Phil and Aly’s celebrated collaboration, going back as far as the 1988 television series that paired them for the first time. At the other end of the time-line, the disc also includes two newly recorded tunes, a fine instrumental version of A Man’s a Man for A’ That and the irresistible Waiting for the Federals, taken at two contrasting tempos. The remainder is prime material drawn from their previous albums together, and reminds us just why they remain such a popular draw on the touring circuit....Kenny Mathieson *****
