Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon (1901 - 1935) remains one of the most evocative works of Scottish literature. Its themes of constancy and change, seen through the eyes of central character Chris Guthrie, are often considered a metaphor for the state of Scotland itself.
This musical interpretation by cellist Wendy Weatherby, with lyrics by David Scott and sung narrative adapted from the words of Grassic Gibbon concentrates on the relationship between Chris and Ewan Tavendale and the effects of World War I on a land and it's people.
Commissioned by and premiered at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow 2004, this work features some of Scotland's finest traditional musicians.
Mairi Macinnes, Rod Paterson (voice); Pete Clark, Chris Stout, Jon Beales, Lawrence Dunn (fiddle); Alison Lucas (viola); Ron Shaw, Wendy Weatherby (cello); James Ross (piano); Leo McCann (button box); Julie Fowlis (oboe, whistle); Stevie Lawrence (bouzouki); Frank McLaughlin (Scottish small pipes, guitar).
