    Skipinnish

    by Skipinnish

Angus MacPhail and Andrew Stevenson who together make up the young Scottish traditional duo Skipinnish, come from the Island of Tiree and the hamlet of Achnacarry in Lochaber respectively. This does not mean they are strangers to fashion, irony and complexity. Both have BA degrees in Scottish music from the RSAMD. Angus's primary instrument is the piano accordion which he studied under Ian Muir, while Andrew's excellent grounding in the great highland bagpipe has been given polish and refinement unter the tutelage of Allan MacDonald of Glenuig. Nevertheless, their debut CD revlead a strong attachment to their rural roots where long-playing aslbums by 'An Gille Dubh MacLachlainn, the late Iain MacLachlan, from Benbecula, and the man with the longest trajectory in Scottish traditional music, Fergie MacDonald from Mingarry, are still almost staples in the musical diet. Accordingly these bright young men have plundered the piping canon shamelessly, apropriated melodic Gaelic airs and, utilising the services of Gaelic singer Rachel Walker and fiddlers Iain MacFarlane from Glenfinnan and Jenna Reid from Shetland, have served up a cracker of a CD.

Skipinnish: Angus MacPhail - accordion with midi bass. Andrew Stevenson - highland pipes & Scottish small pipes.

    Guest musicians: Rachel Walker - vocals (tracks 4 & 8, piano tracks 4, 8 & 11). Iain MacFarlane - fiddle (tracks 2, 6 & 10, whistle track 2). Jenna Reid - fiddle (tracks 4 & 8).

Haunting melodies, "foot stomping" music and bell like vocals. Wonderful
