Peerie Willie Johnson - Willie's World

    by Peerie Willie Johnson

Welcome to Willie's World – a world filled with music from jazz to traditional pieces, from blues to beautiful chord accompaniments, and performances second to none.  ‘Peerie’ Willie was a wonderful guitarist much admired by musicians and guitar aficionados from across the musical spectrum.  Regrettably Peerie Willie never made a solo CD  but here we have 24 tracks from some of the memorable albums Willie guested on, and informal recordings made locally in Shetland.

Those accompanying Peerie Willie include Billy Kay, Drew Robertson, Norman Goudie, Harris Playfair, Jimmy Elliot, Nathan Leask, George Manson, Frankie Sinclair, Willie Hunter, Ron Mathewson, Harold Mathewson, Aly Bain and Debbie Scott.

"When i think of 'Peerie' Willie I don't think of him as a musician, but as music itself - it oozed out of his every pore".........Martin Taylor

"Peerie" Willie Johnson was one of the great folk guitarists of this world. His music style is closely linked to the music of the Shetland Isles of the last century. He was one of those musicians who played what he enjoyed playing - and the music bridged lots of different styles: From traditional Shetland fiddle music via Jazz to Blues. "Peerie" Willie passed away on 22 May 2007, aged 86.
This album is a great legacy to this unique musician - the only full album ever published of his music. And the recordings stem from the last 50 years, many recorded in various living rooms across the Shetland isles. Many of the tunes feature other musicians - including fiddlers Willie Hunter and Aly Bain, and pianist Billy Kay....This is an album full of natural charme and warmth...I love this album, which has a firm place in my top 10 of 2007...Michael Moll..http://www.folkworld.eu
