Media Reviews
The Vale have long been noted for their musicality and their knack for innovation among pipe bands.
The Vale have long been noted for their musicality and their knack for innovation among pipe bands. This concert recording features the band, under P/M Ian Duncan and D/S James King, during their August, 1995 concert in Motherwell, Scotland.
The band's pipe section features the likes of Gordon Duncan, and Wolfstone's piper Stevie Saint, but the two solo selections included on this album prove that the talent doesn't end there. Mary Ann MacKinnon is best known for her compositions, such as Mists of Time and Steam Train to Mallaig, but she displays on this CD her superb technique as well. Then-16 year old Andrew Wright also impresses with his solo selection.
The band selections are well done, but lack a bit of polish that is evident in some of the other live concert recordings I own. The selection of tunes is wonderful, with no fewer than nine compositions by R.S. MacDonald among other modern tunes, along side some of the classics.
