ALASDAIR Fraser and his collaborators concentrate on music for fiddle, piano and cello from the time of Robert Burns in this album. It often reflects a chamber music rather than folk feel, especially on the slow and mid-tempo material. That is doubtless an accurate reflection of the ethos of the late 18th century, when musicians crossed freely from society recitals to country dances. Familiar tunes like Afton Water and Rattlin’ Roarin’ Willie stand alongside more obscure items in the 60-odd tunes they get through.
