Jim Reid - Yont the Tay

    by Jim Reid

In his first album for Greentrax, produced by Dr Fred Freeman, Jim includes such traditional classics as Daft Donul and The Baron O Brackley. He is without a doubt an outstanding singer and songwriter, and as a lover of the work of poet Violet Jacob, has set many of her poems to music - on this album, Bonnie Joann. This CD also includes Jim's recording of "The Freedom Come All Ye", for the Hamish Henderson Tribute Album is added as a bonus track .

Musicians: Jim Read (vocals), Aaron Jones (cittern), Sandy Brechin (accordion), Marc Duff (whistle, recorder), Malcolm Stitt (bouzouki), Frank McLaughlin (guitar) and Ian Anderson (vocals).

    Media Reviews

Reid’s voice is placed centre stage, supported by deft but unobtrusive accompaniments by some of Scotland’s top players

Jim Reid could be regarded as something of an anach- ronism amid the crossover fusions and contemporary updatings that prevail on the current Scottish folk scene, but his latest release is a reminder of the virtues of unadorned folk singing. Reid’s voice is placed centre stage, supported by deft but unobtrusive accompaniments by some of Scotland’s top players. The singer revisits his classic setting of Violet Jacob’s poem Wild Geese alongside classic traditional material like Harlaw and Cairn o Mount. His previously released version of Hamish Henderson’s Freedom Come All Ye is an added bonus.
