Jim Reid could be regarded as something of an anach- ronism amid the crossover fusions and contemporary updatings that prevail on the current Scottish folk scene, but his latest release is a reminder of the virtues of unadorned folk singing. Reid’s voice is placed centre stage, supported by deft but unobtrusive accompaniments by some of Scotland’s top players. The singer revisits his classic setting of Violet Jacob’s poem Wild Geese alongside classic traditional material like Harlaw and Cairn o Mount. His previously released version of Hamish Henderson’s Freedom Come All Ye is an added bonus.
