Inside the Thunder - Dougie MacLean

    by Dougie MacLean

Dougie MacLean has for many year been at the forefront of the development of Scottish music and song. One of Scotland's most gifted and successful contemporary singer-songwriters, his innovative work has created a modern interpretation of this music but its fundamental  values remain rooted  in the ancient Scots culture.

This CD features a brand new selection of Dougie's songs:

This is a truly wonderful CD. I have been a Dougie MacLean fan for a few years now and this (as if it were possible to follow up Riof & Who Am I - my favourites so far) is Dougie’s best one to date..... After the first couple of listenings I was slightly disappointed the melody lines being new to me took a couple plays to sink in. When I became more familiar with them they just grew and grew on me. Every time I play it now I have a different favourite track. Dougie has a wonderful knack of taking a simple lyric and riff and turning them into truthful, earthy, meaningful songs. Dougie’s son Jamie has done a fantastic job producing this CD and plays some brilliant percussion. The electric guitar used on the CD is extremely tasteful. The tracks I love at the moment are “Song For Johnny” a moving tribute to Johnny Cunningham & “Into the Flames” which has me singing at the top of my voice in the car travelling to work with the ol’ tingles running down my spine. The next time I play it there will be another favourite. Do yourself a big favour and buy it this CD. It’s pure magic Dougie you must truly be Scotland’s favourite son.

Another great album from Dougie! Like one of the previous reviewers, it took me a couple of listens for the tunes to sink in and I too find myself listening "in my mind" to my favorites. I must say, however, that this album is somehow depressing in that the songs talk of leaving here and death and are somewhat sad. I suppose with the death of friends that is a natural outlet. I find myself going back to other Dougie albums for a lift. Let me be clear, however. This is a great album!!
