    Greengold

    by The Cast

Mairi Campbell has a gorgeous voice for Scots song but she can also tackle more contemporary material and on this, the third album from The Cast, there is a fine and well-balanced mix of both.  I particularly liked the rather lovely version of the Robert Burns classic love song  'Red Red Rose' set to a tune by Simon Thoumire. Mairi Campbell and David Francis have made another excellent and totally charming album. Their version of Auld Lang Syne (from their CD The Winnowing) plays a starring role in the 2008 movie of Sex in the City. Check out their other CDs - The Colours of Lichen.

Vocal and instrumental skill shines from a beguilingly low-key production.

The third album from Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis, on vocals, fiddle, viola and guitar, is a gentle collection of mainly self-penned songs with a couple of winsome tunes. Burns' 'The Lea Rig' and 'Red Red Rose' get the stylised Campbell vocal treatment, while the couple's compositions tend towards the sincere and sentimental. Vocal and instrumental skill shines from a beguilingly low-key production. http://scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/review.cfm?id=1180432007

sweet, evocative singing framed against spare guitar accompaniments

SINGER and fiddler Mairi Campbell and guitarist Dave Francis have earned a reputation for making refined, often subtly understated music over the years, and their latest outing is well up to standard. Campbell's sweet, evocative singing is framed against spare guitar accompaniments and her own elegant fiddle playing, spiced up by the addition of Derek Hoy's meaty fiddle on Jean Yelland (an instrumental by Campbell) and the traditional song Higher Germany. http://www.scotsman.com
