The release of the Gaelic Heart CD in 2003 saw the realisation of a long held ambition by Donnie to record an all Gaelic album of traditional songs poignant to him from his childhood. It was also eagerly anticipated by his fans who have always felt that his strong tenor voice is particularly suited to the traditional Gaelic ballads. With the absence of any Waulking Songs and Puirt a beul this is overall a very gentle album. The opening track An Eala Bhan (The White Swan ) sets the scene of the album. The first of all traditional songs arranged by Donnie, Chris Harley and Allan Cuthbertson it is a beautiful slow air to which Donnie's voice does complete justice. The sleeve notes also thoughtfully supply an English translation of the songs.

the traditional Gaelic songs are a perfect vehicle for his richly expressive voice
After 23 years with Runrig Donnie moved into education and politics as well as developing his solo career. Here he takes a genuine journey back to his roots and his childhood on the Isle Of Skye with an album that reflects Donnie's earliest influences. On this third solo CD the traditional Gaelic songs are a perfect vehicle for his richly expressive voice, ranging from full blown sweeping orchestral to a more natural ambient approach which brings some obvious comparisonswith Enya. There's a nice feel to this helped by Donnie's obvious love of the material.
