Edinburgh with its vibrant traditional music scene is the place where hundreds of leading musicians, composers and performers have chosen as home in the last decade.The First 'Flowers of Edinburgh' concert which took place on 12th April, 1998 as part of the Shoots & Roots Festival show-cased the wonderful talents of over thirty of those superb artists. The Flowers of Edinburgh CD recorded live at this land-mark concert features a selection of those amazing performances.

Sandy plays a mixture of trad, pop jazz and cajun. Seelyhoo & Sandy Brechin Band. Mairi Campbell - fiddle. Workshop leader and much in demand teacher, she plays in 'The Cast'and The Bella McNab Band. Marianne Campbell - fiddle. Great player and member of dynamic young band Deaf Shepherd and duo cMc. Marianne can also be heard on Snap and Roll (SNAP 001), Heat the Hoose 2 (CDFSR1707)
Elspeth Cowie - Vocal. Great traditional singer, Elspeth has been a member of Seannachie and Chantan. Elspeth can also be heard on Scottish Love Songs (CDTT1003), The Devils Delight (RRCD003), Naked Voice (SFCD1) Angus Grant - fiddle. Angus is a striking figure and great fiddler with top band Shooglenifty. Russell Hunter - piano, fiddle. Plays with the Andrew Knight band and his own group Russell's House. Russell can also be heard on Heat the Hoose 2 (CDFSR1707) Iain MacInnes - Lowland pipes. Iain is a producer with the BBC amd plays with legendary band Ossian and Smalltalk. Talitha Mackenzie - vocals. Co-fouder of the duo Mouth Music she appears here courtesy of Shanachie entertainment Corp. Clare McLaughlin - fiddle. plays with great Irish fiddler Liz Doherty and is a member of Deaf Shepherd and duo cMc. Everyone's favourite mandolin player, Iain plays in great band Shooglenifty. Leo McCann - button accordian. great player from County Tyrone,Leo plays in Corner House and Power Trout. Jim Malcolm - vocal, mouth organ. A greatly admired singer/songwriter, Jim plays with Rohallion and The Old Blind Dogs. Ross Martin - guitar. Known for his beautiful sensitive playing, Ross works with Tabache and has recorded with Fred Morrison. John Morran - vocal, guitar. The wonderful voice of Deaf Shepherd. Eilidh Shaw - fiddle. Eilidh is a member of super traditionalband Keep it Up and has recently joined The Poozies. Eilidh can also be heard on Keep it Up (CDFSR1701), Heat the Hoose (CDTT1004), Heat the Hoose 2 (CDFSR1707) Mae Shaw - vocal. A lovely interpretor of traditional songs. Jim Sutherland - bodhran, djembe. Record producer, composer award-winning film writer, Jim has played with rock stars Page and Plant and was a member of ground-breaking band The Easy Club. Simon Thoumire - concertina. Great musician, composer, ideas man, Simon is a winner of the prestigious BBC Young Tradition Award and currently plays with superb Edinburgh trad band Keep it Up. This compilation of most of the artists appearing at the Shoots & Roots festival concert in Edinburgh just lets us hear some of the wealth of young talent we have in Scotland today. Thirty two musicians and singers in as varied a programme as one could wish. Top folkies from most of the favourite groups in the folk scene all doing a party piece and although space prevents me from mentioning them all can I just say that I was amazed at some of these fine performances. This disc more than any I’ve heard for a while illustrates just how far the young element has transformed our native music...….

The Flowers of Edinburgh CD is a bouquet indeed, displaying how luxuriously the traditional music scene in the nation’s capital is flourishing with performances from such distinguished names as Eilidh Shaw, Sandy Brechin, Jim Malcolm and Simon Thoumire plus lots more. Instruments featured include fiddles, small pipes from Iain MacInnes, harp from Charlotte Petersen, bodhran and djembe. To demonstrate even further that trad music transcends boundaries and politics, American Talitha Mackenzie sings a traditional dance song from Serbia. After that it’s a treat to hear Scott Skinner and traditional fiddle tunes from Russell Hunter, Eilidh Shaw, Simon Bradley and Angus Grant, before cheering up with Sandy Brechin’s speeding accordion. The collection ends with perhaps the only recording in captivity of mass diddling, which shows just what a good time was had at the Shoots & Roots festival where the album was recorded live.……The Scots Magazine
A most entertaining album for lovers of Scottish music………
This is a collection of performances from the first ‘Flowers of Edinburgh’ concert. It features 12 tracks of mainly Scottish folk music by no less than 17 artists. There is great variety of tempo and style here with tunes and songs by wildly disparate musicians. The jigs reels and marches come in batches of up to six interspersed with songs, giving the feeling of a concert. My favourite track is Ajde Jano a Serbian dance song with a heavy rhythmic drum beat sung by Talitha Mackenzie from America. Not surprisingly, the tartan pimpernel Simon Thoumire is performing and it was he who produced the album on his own label. A most entertaining album for lovers of Scottish music……….
