Formed in 1992, Concerto Caledonia brings together some of Scotland's finest period instumentalists who have forged an enviable reputation for themselves through their numerous festival appearances and radio broadcasts. The group mixes fiddle tunes, folk songs, reels and sonatas from Edinburgh’s Enlightenment with more contemporary repertoire .
On this CD they perform music by Thomas Erskine, The 6th Earl of Kellie or "fiddler Tam" as the 18th century student of Stamitz and the Mannheim style, contemporary of Haydn and Boswell, and rabble rouser of some repute, was endearingly known to his close associates.
Recordingsd of his surviving compositions have led to him being re-evaluated as one of the most important British composers of the 18th century.
