A lovely fiddle CD featuring Gregor Borland who learned his craft from master musicians Donald Riddell and Hector MacAndrew. On this, his debut CD, he has put together an excellent and imaginative programme which includes pipe marches, reels and jigs plus such gems as 'Neil Gow's Lamentation on the death of his brother Donald ' and a gorgeous slow air from the Knockie Collection written by Neil Kennedy titled - in translation - 'I can't conceal that I prefer you'.
Musicians: Gregor Borland - fiddle, viola, acousdtic bass, bowed acoustic bass; Julian Sutton - melodion; Ian Stephenson - acoustic guitar, double bass, acoustic bass gitar, harmonium; Bob Turner - piano(tr2); James Gray - piano (tr 4/9); Morag MacAskill - piano (tr6/11).

bowstroke, well worth waiting for.. lewis macgregor
after hearing gregors wonderfull playing at fiddle festival in edinburgh last year-this cd was due to be available then, but i had to wait till this years festival to buy it. Well it was worth the wait, it has gregors fine traditional playing (especially pipe marches and stunning strathspeys)and also some new tunes and arrangements with Julian Sutton and Ian Stephenson (kathryn tickell band)gelling brilliantly with gregors fiddle playing. all in all a fine cd with lots of contrast and variation - one question..when is the next cd coming? great stuff lewis McG
a wee gem darren masson
Just got this lovely cd (hard to get in the states atm) but it is a cd where Greg excels. He has kept his strong traditional roots here, but also explored more contemporary areas with new tunes and arragements, thus making this a very enjoyable and varied listening experience..Great stuff... d
BOWSTROKE Hugh Somerville
Gregor Borland’s raw talent was moulded by two legendary teachers Donald Riddell and Hector McAndrew who must surely be applauding from on high at this demonstration of Gregor’s virtuosity. Twelve carefully selected and beautifully balanced sets delivered with precision and passion make up this marvellous CD. The Loch Ness Set reflects Gregor’s pride in his roots; slow airs include his own composition the lovely Tanera Mor; strathspeys, jigs, marches, reels and even a Bouree by Julian Sutton called Windy Beach will leave you asking for more. Hopefully we won’t have long to wait for the next album but in the meantime rush out and buy this one – ye’ll no regret it!
masterstroke lewis macgregor
just great to hear gregor's brilliant debut album, which i believe has been a long time coming - but well worth waiting for, stunning traditional strathspeys, pipe marches, slowairs and reels...blended sweetly with more contemporary tunes and styles in other sets....all i can say is get it while you can L McG
