Aly Bain - The Legendary Down Home Recordings

    by Aly Bain

This 1990 CD  features much of the music from the Down Home television series.  Shetland fiddler Aly Bain travels from the Shetland Islands to Nashville, the Appalachians and the Canadian Maritimes, chatting with various folks, finding common ground, and playing extraordinary music.
Aly Bain himself opens proceedings with a blistering performance of the show’s signature tune, "The Hangman’s Reel," paving the way beautifully for the twenty-four tracks of music that follow. Even without the dialogue of the films, the musical connections are often self-evident, as the music simply speaks for itself. The list of musicians here includes the names of some of the greatest fiddle players in the world, names like Jean Carignan, Mark O’Connor and Willie Hunter. Much of the joy to be had from this CD comes from hearing these masters performing in collaboration with each other.
