Ali "Beag" MacLeod The Sands Of Achnahaird

    by Ali "Beag" Macleod

Boxes, fiddles, pipes, whistles and song. This album encapsulates the sound of Coigach in the far north west Highlands. Lead by Ali on his traditional Highland two-row button melodeon, the friends trade group sets and solos, tunes and songs in Gaelic and Scots stylings. Reels, jigs and waltzes, stonking pipe sets and old-timey tunes. Gaelic and Scottish melodies are interspersed with a selection of Ali's own compositions which reveal his great appreciation of Gaelic singers, pipers, fiddlers and accordionists. Many musical friends from coigach joined him for the sessions in Achiltibuie; piper Alastair Fraser, fiddler Fraser McNaughton, Mairead Green on accordion, singer Sandy "Boots" Macleod and Kevin Macleod on bouzouki. A fine time was had by all, as you may hear.

    Media Reviews

..authentic, refreshing, affecting music for our increasingly homogenous world.

Up where Wester Ross slips into Sutherland and the sun sets over the Summer Isles, Ali Beag's melodeonis at the heart of this album, which will take you to Achiltibuie when you can't make the journey there.

Native favourites, old Gaelic waltzes, new tunes for old pals, swaggering local songs, and dance sets ringing with the pipes - it's a Coigach ceilidh in your living room.

Not sterile musical perfection, but with more life than organic yoghurt, the West Highland push-pull button accordion makes authentic, refreshing, affecting music for our increasingly homogenous world.
