The Crunluath Collection (book & CD)

This is a lovely book, the work of Angus MacPhee which features his collection of new Gaelic Songs based on bagpipe music in both Ceòl Beag and Ceòl Mor. There are extensive notes in both Gaelic and English. The words to the songs while written below the musical notation in Gaelic also have English translations supplied at the back. The tracks on the accompanying CD each have a few bars of the tune (and you will recognise many of them!) played on the bagpipes followed by the sung version featuring either the composer Angus MacPhee or Fiona MacKenzie of the Mairi Mhor Gaelic Song Fellowship.

"When Angus MacPhee first showed me his collection of new Gaelic songs all based on pipe tunes, I immediately felt that this was a  project worth bringing to fruition. The Gaelic Song repertoire today is full of beautiful, traditional old songs and a few new ones too but if the tradition is to develop and grow, then new material  must be made and used. We often hear pipe tunes and think to ourselves, "Wouldn't it be nice if there were words to that song?" Well now, there will be many to them. Part of the remit of the Mairi Mhor Fellowship is to encourage the writing of new songs and we are sure that this new collection will be of great interest and use to many Gaelic singers, from all across the world. The piobaireachd songs included will be of particular interest to many singers as the songs have been made remaining entirely true to the style and form of the played Piobaireachd. They will present an challenge to many singers but once mastered will be listened to with intense interest and fondness by pipers and singers alike. The accompanying CD wiull also be helpful to singers who will be able to hear exactly how Angus intends the songs to be sung. This is particularly useful to those singers who may be unfamiliar with the form of the Ceòl Mor and how it is played. The songs and introductions are presented in th authors original Gaelic spelling at his request...........We should remember that it is by no accident that  in the Gaelic language, we 'sing' the pipes - we do not 'play' them"
