Aeolus! by Donald MacIntyre (Domhnall Ruadh Mac an -Saoir). A poetry book in Gaelic and English with an accompanying audio CD. Introduction, Notes & Parallel Translation by Bill Innes.
"Donald MacIntyre (Domhnall Ruadh Mac an -Saoir) 1889-1964, is best remembered today for his comic songs such as Sporan Dhomhnaill, Buth Dhomhnaill 'ic Leoid and Oran na Cloiche which were once the staple fare of the ceilidh. They linger on in famous recordings by Captain Donald Joseph Mackinnon (An Eosag). But anyone who has read his collected poetry (Sporan Dhomhnaill, Scottish Gaelic Texts Society 1968) will know such songs were but the superficial gloss on the brilliance of his talent.
His masterwork, Aeolus agus am Balg, won him the bardic crown at An Comunn Gaidhealach aththe 1938 National Mod in Glasgow. One of the judges hailed it then as "the Gaelic poem of the century..." In this new century it must still be regarded as one of the finest examples of the art and power of the traditional bard. As with all his poetry, the full effect can only be realised if it is read aloud." Extract from the introduction to Aeolus, by Bill Innes.
....As traditional poetry was composed for recitation, the actual music of the words and resonance of the voice are crucial to the power of the poem. The audioCD which comes with the book reveals the rich rhythm and melody which hallmarked Macintyre's mastery of classic metres. As an epic traditional ballad dealing with 20th century events in allegorical form, Aeolus can surtely claim to be unique in the Gaelic corpus.
