    Suil Air Ais (Looking Back)

    by Catherine-Ann MacPhee

Catherine-Ann MacPhee is one of Gaeldom's most celebrated singers. On this album, her first since 1994, she sings many of her all-time favourite Gaelic songs including several from her childhood on the Island of Barra like Ho mo Luran, He mo Luran  and Failte Dhruim Fionn. Catherine-Ann has dedicated this CD to the memory of some very dear friends including the late John McGrath founder of the great 7.84 Theatre Company and Tony Cuffe and Davy Steele two much-missed stalwarts of the traditional music scene. The CD was produced by Tony McManus.

    Musicians:
    Catherine-Ann MacPhee: vocals
    Wendy Stewart: clarsach
    Tony McManus: guitars
    Neil Martin: cello
Iain MacDonald: flute & small pipes
    Ewen Vernal: bass
    Mairi MacInnes: backing vocals

    Listen

    1. Ho mo Luran, He mo Luran
The very first song I sang at a ceilidh in Northbay Village Hall, Barra. I was about six or seven years old
    2. Mal Na Mara
Written by the Melbost bard Murdo MacFarlane
    3. Failte Dhruim Fionn
It was from my distinguished fellow villager Calum Johnstone that I learned this song. He was a gentle wonderful man who always had time for a wee lassie who wanted to hear him sing or pipe.
    4. Griogal Cridhe
There are many variants, but this version which I learnt from the singing of Jessie MacKenzie is my favourite
    5. Puirt-a-beul
    Ci’n Fhidheall
    6. Sguaban Arbhair
    By Calum MacDonald
    7. A Ghaoil Leig Dhachaidh/Leannan Mo Ghaoil
    Two traditional songs
    8. Mo Chridhle Trom ‘s mi Seoladh
This is one of my all-time favourite ceilidh songs
    9. Gaol An t-Seoladair
There are many beautiful Gaelic love songs but I particularly like this one because it highlights what loving, forgiving beings we lassies are!
    10. Am Buachaille Ban
This is the sing-a-long number on the album
    11. Puirt-a-Beul
    Puirt - Calum Beag
    12. Mo Robaineach Gaolach
This is the very first Gaelic song I can consciously remember from my earliest childhood.
    13. O Losa Bi’n Comhnaidh
This is one of my favourite Hymns and I would like to dedicate it to my dear friend Michelle in South Uist.
