    Grit

    by Martyn Bennett

There are ten tracks on this unforgettable album. Though still a very young man Martyn Bennett has had a debilitating and desperate struggle with ill-health yet he has again managed to produce an amazingly powerful piece of work. Using voice archive recordings of singers like Lizzie Higgins and Sheila Stewart which he has married to electronic techno noise and dance rhythms he delivers a modern sounding album still true to its traditional roots. Amongst the passages of crunching beats there are contrasting almost peaceful interludes. Martyn Bennett is an artist who continues to astound.

Martyn Bennett has also recorded: Martyn Bennett , Hardland , Glen Lyon

    Media Reviews

    ..intense and often very moving...

A sonic collage of archive and vintage recordings from the Scots and Gaelic traditions, integrated with Bennett's trademark contemporary dance beats... this intense and often very moving collection is carried by the monumental voices

An absorbing reconciliation of the raw and the cooked

    Grit - Martyn Bennett

I can't believe no one has submitted a review of this excellent CD already. I first heard it whilst browsing in Fopp Records in Rose Street- the track that was playing was "Blackbird". I didn't know it was Martyn until the next track "Chanter". This was not long after Martyn's untimely death. I bought the CD and play it regularly. What can I say other than it is a brilliant album - I particularly like "Blackbird", "Move" and "Liberation". Tracks blend everything from Harry Lauder, spoken word, gaelic psalms, traveller tales and much more. Altogether a great album and well worth listening to again and again.
