    Roads Not Travelled

by Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham

At long last a new CD from Aly & Phil - and as if that's not something to celebrate, it's got that much requested beautiful air "The Gentle Light that Wakes Me". Stunning!

The CD opens with three smashing Phil Cunningham jigs including the Para Handy Theme and goes on to delight with a couple of lovely Ronnie Cooper waltzes originally recorded by Aly on his first solo album 20 years ago. Phil's wonderful composing skills are apparent throughout this cracking  CD, their sixth release as a duo. But it is hard to put your finger on that heart stopping something that always shines through in Aly Bain's playing of Phil's slow airs -"The Gentle Light that Wakes Me" is one example and "A Bright Star in Cepheus" written in memory of Phil's brother Johnny - both exquisite.

Featuring: Aly Bain - fiddle; Phil Cunningham - accordions, whistles, mandolin, piano, cittern, keyboards.
Guest Musicians: Anna Massie - Acoustic guitars; Martin O’Neil - bodhran.

    Media Reviews

..they can produce a big toe-tapping band sound, but the album always winds back to basics, and the remarkable empathy between two great masters pf the fiddle and accordion

Scotland’s favourite duo release another album full of Phil’s appealingly sweet tunes. Aly’s lush touch can can also be felt – especially on the airs and waltzes, of which there are some gorgeously played ones, including the previously unrecorded ‘The Gentle Light That Wakes Me’ and ‘ A Bright Star In Cepheus’, dedicated to the memory of his fiddler brother johnny. With guest musicians on guitar and bodhran, plus Phil’s skill on half a dozen other instruments, they can produce a big toe-tapping band sound, but the album always winds back to basics, and the remarkable empathy between two great masters pf the fiddle and accordion.............Norman Chalmers   www.scotsman.com 20th August 2006.
