The Donald MacLeod Memorial Competition is an invitational piping competition held on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. The competition, started in 1994 by the Lewis & Harris Piping Society was instituted to honor Donald MacLeod, one of the best all-around pipers of the 20th century. In addition to being a superb piper and teacher, MacLeod was one of the century's best composers. He wrote a huge number of tunes of all varieties of pipe music, many of which are modern classics. Donald MacLeod was an outstanding piper and an expert teacher but it was as a composer that he created his own memorial. His compositions cover the whole range of pipe music, showing a remarkable inventiveness and originality, and his published works are testament to his awareness that he should share his gifts with others.
The competition features top pipers, playing mainly Donald MacLeod compositions. This CD from the 2000 competition has been released to showcase the talents of these top pipers who are William McCallum, Angus McColl, Roderick MacLeod, Gordon Walker and Niall Matheson.
