Piobaireachd is often referred to as the classical music of the Highland Bagpipe as it takes the form of a theme and variations. Many tunes date from the 17th and 18th centuries and were composed to commemorate important events in these times. Laments and Salutes to Clan chiefs and notable characters are common as are Battle and Gathering tunes.
