I see Brian Kennedy is performing the Irish entry this year and Karen Mathieson has previously represented France!
The closest we ever got was with Kenneth McKellar in 1966(?). :-(

Would you like to hear more traditional or folk performers "having a go" or would it just damage the credibility of our music and performers?

In 1997 Sandy Brechin played as part of the band “Do Re Mi, with Kerry” who were runners up for the UK entry.

Well, it might not be scottish folk, but look at the guy playing the pipes. He even got a solo!

Albania's contribution to the Eurovison 2006. We'll see if they pass the semi-finals (tomorrow apparently).

WHY THE HELL DO WE ENTER THIS COMPETITION.

WE CAN HAVE THE BEST ENTRY OR THE WORST BUT EVERYONE VOTES FOR THEIR NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES OR FRIEND COUNTRIES.

I AM ANNOYED AS I REALLY ENJOYED THIS YEARS SONG, AND THOUGHT IT WAS CATCHY AND FUN..UNLIKE THE LOAD OF RUBBISH THIS YEAR FROM OTHER COUNTRIES...WHICH WERE MAINLY BLONDE PLASTICS WITH NO TALENT BUT LOOK GOOD IN COSTUMES.

ANOTHER REASON TO FEEL SO ANNOYED IS THAT WE PAY FOR THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST ALONG WITH THE OTHER COUNTRIES THAT DO NOT DO THAT WELL..LIKE FRANCE AND GERMANY.

I THINK THIS SUCKS AND WE SHOULD JUST WITHDRAW FROM THE COMPETITION AND STOP WASTING ALL THIS MONEY ON THE COMPTETION!

ALSO THE FINNISH ENTRY THIS YEAR HAS TO BITE THE BISCUIT AND BE THE WORST EVER!

THANK YOU AND AGREE!

The fact that neighbouring countries vote for each other is prob not _just_ politics...

How often do we get eastern or southern european music on the commercial raido here? (Or how often do we get someone singin in French for that matter...?) And is that music not more likely to be played in neighbouring countries that have a culture and a language (and musical tradition) closer to the country of origin...?

And the reason Finland won, is prob that Europe has finally realised what a joke the Eurovision is, and voted for the act that took the p**s... :-)

Not sure Finland's ever won before, so I'm happy for them even if I can't see myself listening to that song (?) voluntarily...

Jfred,

I would agree with you about the culture and language thing but last night all the songs were sung in English. Also, they had very little to do with the culture of each country!

The show was indeed a load of p---h! Poor Brian Kennedy looked exceedingly embarrassed when the hostess approached him backstage. "Are you really excited?" She sreamed. "Yes, I'm really excited" he replied with a "What the h*ll am I doing here?" look in his eyes.

Actually, two of the best ever Eurovision songs were not winners
1961 "Are you sure?" The Allisons which came second. For its time, this was a great pop record.

1967 L'Amour est Bleu" by Vicky Leandros came fourth.

The latter was later recorded as an instrumental version "love is Blue" by Paul Mauriat. It was also a hit for Jeff Beck in 1968. Apparently, the ex Yardbird guitarist didn't like the song and deliberately played out of tune. It still sold loads, though!

Ach, well done to Mr Kennedy for keeping the Irish in the top half anyway. Wogan's comment on the Greek entry still has me smiling: "4000 years of culture and they've given us the bouzouki".
