I heard sad news today that wonder piper Gordon Duncan was found dead this morning in his house. Gordon - still a young man was the leading piper of his generation. His albums are totally innovative. He also wrote many classic tunes including Andy Renwick's Ferret and the High Drive. I will so miss his big sets of tunes that get madder and madder and more brilliant. He will be very sadly missed.

Sadly missed

One of my earliest memories of playing music in Scotland was seeing the mist rolling down Birnam hill on an autumn day as Gordon let rip to a set of reels in the Taybank.

God Rest his soul, he was an amazing preformer and piper which can be clearly seen in all of his brilliant cds, amazing compositions and achievements. His tunes really inspired me and many others, many of them not even pipers. Another very sad moment for the piping and traditional music community.

Devastating news. I've never met a piper with anything but the highest praise for him. So sad for his family, but what a legacy of brilliance he leaves.

What sad news, this really is just devastating. Not just a loss to piping, but to the whole music community. This mans playing and compositions were, and always will be, some of the best that I ever enjoyed listening to. Thouroughly enjoyed.
Condolences to his family, and those hurt the greatest by this tragedy.

This is terribly sad shocking news. Another inspirational musician gone. Too sad.

Maybe there's a most almighty session going on somewhere in the ether that we can't get to as yet...

Gordon had all of the ingredients required to make him so extra-special and that, by the very nature of the man, meant taking it to the edge.
Already, many years ago, the stories were legendary.
No doubt over the coming days and weeks, some of the better ones will emerge to let a wider audience know just how special he was.
Undoubtedly a most gloriously eccentric and brilliantly original young blast of a piper, he was a "deil" who had his own way of doing things, but when he was on form, no one could match him.
We have heavy, heavy hearts as well as very warm memories of wonderfully magic moments he conjoured up to surprise us all.

I too am saddened. One of my first tunes as a beginning fiddler was Andy Renwick's Ferret, about three years ago when Jane McCardel taught it at GFW. Haven't been able to get it out of my head since and Gordon playing it on Thunderstruck is amazing. Another tune that hasn't been mentioned yet and that I'm into is the Ramnee Ceilidh. And the Famous Baravan is, well, famous.

Oh muy God this is terrible. I still remember night at the Taybank wher he'd convinced me I could play the pipes in the landing after mucho beers.

This is a real tragedy befalling possibly our greatest piper for generations.

The two pipers that kept me playing the pipes where Martynn Bennet and Gordon Duncan.. The two great innovators gone in such a short space of time. Who is there to replace such amazing musicians and pipers.....

I still can't believe it.

Sad news. As Haggis says, Gordon's influence has extended far beyond the piping world.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Sad day for Piping, Sad day for Scottish Traditional music. Sad day for Scotland.

Norman Chalmers described him best, I think, when he referred to Gordon as- "THE PAGANINI OF PIPES - ALL GRACE NOTES & DANGER!"

Desperately sad news that I heard this morning - words fail me.

Scottish music is a smaller place without him.
