The only lyrics I can recall to Cock of the North are:-
Auntie Mary had a canary Up the leg o her drawers She pu'd a string Tae mak it sing an doon cam Santy Claus.
There were bawdier versions around but that was our family's version:-) |

Hope I don't get into trouble for this........
Aunt Mary had a canary Up the leg of her drawers She pulled the string to hear it sing And down came Santa Claus
Uncle Jock, he had a sock Up the pleat of his kilt When he was a-sleepin, we were a-peepin To see how well he was built
Chase me Charlie, I've got barley Up the leg of me drawers If you don't believe me, come and feel me Up the leg of me drawers
Cousin Minnie wore a bikini Underneath her shirt A handsome guy he tried to spy And she kicked him where it hurt.

Hi Tom
C'mere is the air to this also a polka which Johnny O Leary used to play with the words...
The hair fell of me coconut The hair fell off me coconut The hair fell off me coconut And how do you like it baldy
And....
If I had a wife the plague of me life I'll tell you what I'd do I build her a boat and set it afloat And paddle me own canoe.

| Could be, Jackie Daly plays a version of Cock o the North as a slide called "Chase me Charlie" on his solo album. Never heard those words though! While on the subject of polkas with dodgy titles - have you heard the one "Shove Into Me Siobháinín and I'll Show You My Tráithnín"? Great title for a great tune! Tráithnín means "strong blade of grass" down Sliabh Luachra way |

At the risk of hi-jacking the thread here. Myself and Kevin were talking in the fish one night about polkas with dodgy titles and he had one called "Hold The Maid down Till I Come At (?) Her". Hadn't heard of that one before
Never had the pleasure of that tune myself from what i remember.
Are you coming down this way for a tune soon???

| Some more useless information - there's a slide called "The Game Cock" AKA "The Bog Carrot" which evolved out of the strathspey Captain Francis Wemyss |

| Bridie was picking carrots in a field when all of a sudden she falls head over heals laughing. "What the devil is wrong with you?" asks her friend Peg. It's that carrot over there, it reminds me of my late husband Paddy. "Jaysus" says Peggy "is it because of the shape of it?" Oh God no, it isn't the shape of it at all. "Well, is it the colour of it then"? Oh God no, it isn't the colour of it at all. "Well what is it then Bridie?" Ah it's the dirt on it Peg |

There's actually a Gaelic song called "Bean an droch nàdair" (the bad-natured wife/woman), to this tune:
Bean an droch nàdair 's beag orm fhìn i, Bean an droch nadair neònaich; Bean an droch nàdair 's beag orm fhìn i, Bean an droch nadair neònaich
etc etc
It's a port a beul. |

My grandma (b 1880s in Glasgow, Irish origin) sang some words to that which included "Chase me Charlie" but I can't remember them.
There is a verse collected by S.P. Bayard in Western Pennsylvania and reproduced in "Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife":
Cock of the East and cock of the West Cock of the North and the South And if you don't get outta my way You'll get my cock in your mouth.
