Who were your favourite performers at the Club? I was there a few times and thought John Spillane was one of the funniest and entertaining. Loved the dancing of Hans Theessink's backing trio. On the home front, enjoyed seeing the return of Deaf Shepherd.

I was only at the festival club for 7 seven nights so I might have missed something good. Anyway the highlights for me were "M74", as far as I can tell the musicians decided they were going to perform about 20 minutes before they went on and about ten minutes after Gibb had said the last band had had finished. M74 comprised of Adam Sutherland, Mark McQuire, Ali Hutton, Findlay Napier, Hamish Napier, Troy McGillvary, Ross Ainsley,Innes Watson and Ian Copeland. The band were fantastic, it was the only time I felt I just had to be up on the dance floor.
A band (a very large one of about 11 people) that I had never heard of before called Bellowhead were just amazing. I'm normally more of a traditionalist folkie but I loved this band and plan to find out where they are playing so I can see them again.
On they last night of the festival club John McCusker and friends (Michael McGoldrick, Ian Carr, Kris Drever, Andy Cutting and more) were the last band of the night and many people missed this wonderful performance, it was a great highlight to finish CC 2005.

My favourite from near the start of the festival was Daniel Lapp and Martin Green. They were great in the club but i didnt get to their gig.

Lunasa and the Mike McGoldrick band were also great along with many others.

Daniel Lapp and Martin Green are great together.
I would like to know how Martin can keep time when his feet don't touch the ground when he sits on a chair.Brilliant on the accordion.
Congratulations to Daniel Lapp on a succesfull trip to Celtic Connections heard and read lots of good reviews.Tell us all about it when you get back to BC
Daniel,You have to hear what we have done with "Couldn't Sechelt" the tune you wrote with Kris Drever and Martin on your boat trip back to the Island.....
Cheers

LOADS! i was lucky enough to catch trash can sinatras, aberfeldy, kelso high school band, zar and instinkt (both from denmark), shooglenifty, the 'M74' ensemble, jo mango and eddi reader twice. all were top notch and would've been worth a fair few quid to have forked out for.
thought the club was way better this year, much more space to watch the bands, easier to get a drink, friendly staff and security, easy for taxi drivers to get there and great value for money.
oh, how i'll miss it for the next 12 months!

Reading this thread is slightly surreal, as I seem to have been in the Festival Club at the same time as some of you guys, yet I haven't a clue who you all are (that is, the ones that haven't got their faces on CD covers)!

Anyway, I enjoyed seeing Julie Fowlis/John Doyle/John McCusker & co, Danish bands Zar and Instinkt, young Graham Mackenzie with Aidan O'Rourke, The Barra MacNeils, Annie Grace Trio (excellent), Shooglenifty, and Scotland's latest roof-raiser, Stuart Cassells. Great stuff, worth every penny of the ticket price!

Thought the VIP lounge (should it not be renamed the Marie Celeste?) seemed a total waste of space - there was barely a soul inside and all the musicians were in the Club/bar areas anyway. Why not get rid of it full stop/relocate it elsewhere and 'expand' the Festival Club into that extra space next year? Would reduce that Friday/Saturday night crush considerably and hopefully allow for more dancing room at the front!!

Probably the best part of Festival Club for me was meeting the "future of Scottish music" - Stuart Cassells, James Graham, Katie Mackenzie, Innes Watson, etc etc.

The bar prices were ridiculously expensive, but who cares when you're at CC and need a drink?

That's exactly what they did for the last few days and it was much better. There was no problem getting served at the bar compared to previous years so nobody had to wait that long.
Those artists who were playing had access to the backstage area anyway so there was no need for a VIP area. Off duty musicians and other "VIPs" were quite happy to mingle with the audience and other punters.

One of the good things about CC for me is that nearly every year I am blown away by someone I hadn't expected it from.

I thought the best thing I saw in my 2 nights at the club was Mary McPartlan, with Shamie O'Dowd on guitar / harmonica / vocals and Eddie Lynch on piano. I had assumed it would be very trad Irish singing, but the bluesy slide guitar and piano rocking away behind her great voice was not what I was expecting at all. I thought they were great.

Dagger.

My favourites were the ones that never appeared! It's amazing how rumours spread during those nights...some claim to "know" exactly who will be on next (and no doubt some do) but some have just "heard" that this new super-group will appear for one night only...and they never do! A pal "knew" (from speaking to a festival staff member) that someone would appear one night, and she forced me to stay on until the club closed....and of course this famous act never showed up... I guess that's part of the charm with the club, but still...!

Without a doubt my favourite act of the whole festival club (and i was there EVERY night) was Le Vent Du Nord from Quebec. They blew me away. They are so funny and you just can't keep still to their music. And they came on at the very end of the nght and had almost the whole audience up on the dance floor doing silly dances with them. Great craic.

I forgot to mention Anna Massie as a Club favourite in my earlier thread.

Thanks for clarifying, John J, that the problem with cramped accommodation was addressed by the final week. It seems a sensible solution, as there was clearly an adequate 'backstage' area, and the VIP area was just wasted space. I agree with you about the bars - we had no problems at all getting refills!

I liked the Festival Club better in its new location, all things considered. The hotel was a comfortable enough place to stay too.

I wish I'd seen Le Vent Du Nord - they seem to blow away everyone who sees them!
