Posted: 22-Jun-2012 19:11 A bit surprised that no-one has mentioned it. A wonderful thing, is it not? http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/jun/20/dudamel-bolivar-sistema-raploch-bignoise |

Posted: 23-Jun-2012 08:29 Ah! but is it folk??? Seriously, I could not attend but the report in the Times was lovely......inspirational..... Our generation allowed inspiration to die, we have turned our beautiful music into bags of sugar and tins of soup...which all taste the same........perhaps these weans can shame us into rediscovering empathy community and love. There will never be a better time to start. |

Posted: 23-Jun-2012 08:47 It's a tremendous achievement for all the kids, and it's to be introduced in various other problem areas throughout the country...Everyone concerned richly deserves the highest acclaim and recognition...superb!! |

Posted: 24-Jun-2012 08:43 What a wonderful opportunity for an interesting and thought provoking thread ...started by Gordon. Has this place really just become an advertising hoarding? Have we no interest in what's happening to society and our role in it? |

Posted: 25-Jun-2012 17:53 Sadly, seems like you may be right, Akhenaton...ok, the youngsters aren't learning "our kind" of music, or promoting it, but I too should have thought more Footstompers would have at least shown an interest...good luck to the kids and their tutors anyway, and more power to their elbow as they roll out the project to other parts of the country! |

Posted: 25-Jun-2012 20:25 I sincerely hope that the lack of written response is an indication of a commonly held belief that El Sistema is indeed a wonderful concept ... therefore not raising the opportunity for debate! I was almost brought to tears while watching the performance ... the total absorption on the faces of the Raploch youngsters as they played was a joy to behold so here, yet again, (must be at least 3 times on this forum!) I'll share a link to where I - and countless thousands of others throughout the world - stand on this subject ... |

Posted: 26-Jun-2012 17:28 I really wanted to be in to see this programme -- but had to go and be a Good Samaritan (and I can't cope with playback tv -- or whatever it's called). So all I managed were the few clips on the news, and the sheer energy and commitment of the weans was heartening! But thank you so much, Sleepin' in the Garden, for that link to a wonderful evaluation of the power and importance of music to humanity. And can anyone tell me if I imagined hearing that the Raploch youngsters had been invited to Venezuela, on a later news item? Anybody have any details (and might some fund-raising be helpful)? |

Posted: 26-Jun-2012 18:07 Hello EKanne - would heartily recommend that you suffer playback TV on this occasion! And yes, the Big Noise has been invited to Venezuela next year, so I suspect there will be a heap of fundraising going on! |
