An article by Aly Bain in today's Scotsman:
"Celebrating the centenary of Norman MacCaig's birth, Aly Bain recalls a fiery friendship that spanned the generations and reflects on a fitting homage to his talents..."

I watched this last night and I'm not sure what to think of it.

I am wondering if Norman McCaig told all his pals to go fishing at the Loch at the Green Corrie or did
the BBC "borrow" the idea behind Andrew Grieg's new book?

I did GM. It was excellent. Norman's poems are intriguing - like his one about the left-handed fiddler....and Aly Bain 's playing of 'Mrs Jamieson's Favourite' reminded me again what a great fiddler he is

Several folk in my SMG class were raving about it this morning, so as I was out - yet again- last night, I am downloading the TV programme to iPlayer: I caught some of the radio programme in the car this afternoon too.

I really enjoyed the programme , I've heard of McCaig but I couldn't recite any of his poems although I have memorised at least 40 Scottish poems , are there any with a story ?

If you get fu -really fu on a wild soiree afore ye board yir sleeper you miss a this:

Sleeping Compartment by Norman MacCaig

I don’t like this, being carried sideways
through the night. I feel wrong and helpless—like
a timber broadside in a fast stream.

Such a way of moving may suit
that odd snake the sidewinder
in Arizona: but not me in Perthshire.

I feel at right angles to everything,
a crossgrain in existence.—It scrapes
the top of my head an my footsoles.

To forget outside is no help either—
then I become a blockage
in the long gut of the train.

I try to think I’m an Alice in Wonderland
mountaineer bivouacked
on a ledge five feet high.

It’s no good. I go sidelong.
I rock sideways…I draw in my feet
To let Aviemore pass.

We "did" Norman MacCaig at school and I loved it. Unfortunately it was around the same time as I was introduced to Ivor Cutler records, and ever since then I read Norman MacCaig's poetry with Ivor Cutler's voice in my head.

Just watching this now. What's the fiddle music that's playing behind the shots. Aly Bain and who?

Some of it was Aly and Ale Müller, if I remember right.

@Rory That was a funny comment about hearing Ivor Cutler's voice reading Norman MacCaig. I'll be hearing Ivor every time I read his poetry now. It's ironic that the only volume of MacCaig's poetry that I have is entitled "Voice-Over"!! LOL!

Loved the programme. Well worth a second look ;) I learnt a lot - and wasn't aware of bias in favour of any of the intrepid hikers/fishermen/gigglers!
