Posted: 28-Sep-2010 13:29 The Distil project (www.distil.org.uk ) produces its 5th Showcase of work by new Scottish composers, largely working in the field of traditional music. The musicians have all taken part in Distil’s residential courses with a range of composers from the worlds of contemporary classical and free improvisation, including well known names such as Alasdair Nicolson, Paul Dunmall and Simon Fell. The line-up of composers for the Showcase is: harpists Rachel Newton and Wendy Stewart, pianist Hamish Napier, guitarist Sandy Stanage, cellist Wendy Weatherby, piper Calum MacCrimmon and flute player Tom Oakes. Their pieces will be played by Scotland’s most eclectic contemporary music group, Mr McFall’s Chamber, who will be working with Sally Beamish to realise the composers’ ideas. |

Posted: 08-Nov-2010 21:11 Rehearsals started this morning at the Tolbooth with Mr McFall's joining Hamish Napier and then Rachel Newton for an initial play-through of their new pieces. What a great band is McFall's - beautiful blend, and so supportive of the composers too. Wendy Stewart (with Ruth Morris on nyckelharpa) and David Milligan up tomorrow. Tickets here - www.stirling.gov.uk/tolbooth - £10 and £6 concession |

Posted: 11-Nov-2010 20:57 Final rehearsals today with Tom Oakes and Angus Lyon. Dress rehearsal tomorrow afternoon then it's showtime at 7.30. Come and enjoy what surprising things folk musicians get up to when they have a string quintet and a maximum of twelve minutes to play with. www.distil.org.uk for info about the project www.stirling.gov.uk/tolbooth |

Posted: 14-Nov-2010 18:11 There's no doubt Tom Oakes is a great, and very nice musician. But a Scottish composer? |

Posted: 14-Nov-2010 20:21 Sorry about that, Dave. At the top of the page, it said: "Showcase of work by new Scottish composers." I didn't know it actually meant open to composers living in Scotland, as well(?). |

Posted: 14-Nov-2010 21:41 It has to be - hard to see how it couldn't be. We take an inclusive line. For our purposes if you live in Scotland yer Scottish. Distil has had English-Scots, Canadian-Scots and Norwegian-Scots involved in the past. |

Posted: 15-Nov-2010 13:09 "The relatively inexperienced Rachel Newton" - ? Aye, right, Rob, whatever you say. |

Posted: 15-Nov-2010 14:04 Here are some photos from the night. It was fantastic. Re 'relatively inexperienced' I'm sure that Rachel would be the first say this was one of first opportunities to write for string quartet. That's what Distil is about. Giving musicians an opportunity to try new things and writing that can take them in new musical directions throughout their career. http://www.flickr.com/photos/footstompin1/sets/72157625391193552/?photo_deleted=5177998909 |

You could also attribute that fact, then, to everyone else on the project. But the context is all wrong: the reviewer has implied she is relatively inexperienced full-stop, which, of course, is not the case. |
