KirstenE Yes all great fiddlers! but only Pete and Gavin are experianced dance band players, so they get a vote as "allrounders". Never has there been so many great fiddlers as have emerged over the past two generations. We are blest with an extremley vibrant fiddle community.(Including the inimitable Aly Bain) Long may yer lums reek.

Aly Bain has been the strongest influence with regards to my own style of fiddle playing. It's a matter of taste though, isn't it? Judi Nicolson, Bryan Gear and Archie MacAllister are just a few great fiddlers whose playing I would quite happily sit and admire. For sheer fluidity, expression and all-round natural ability though, it has to be Aly.

This thread has gone round in so many convoluted circles its in danger of disappearing up its own F hole.
It is surely self evident that what at least a dozen of you have already said, “the beauty is in the ear of the beholder” is undisputable. When I came into this music early 60’s there was one fiddler whom I can bring to mind, Erland Voy of the Clutha who played a phono if I remember correctly. In fact you were hard pressed to find anyone who could play anything except guitar. A few years later it was changing and at Blair 66 or so I watatched a young lad from Shetland with a fiddle blow everyone away with his sheer virtuosity and to his credit still can. After a visit to the Shetland FF this year I admit to being astonished at the sheer volume of wonderful fiddlers in those islands alone and I’m well aware of the wonderful talent elsewhere in the country. I would hope that we would all agree that the incredible change that has come over our music since the early wall to wall guitar “revival”days is due in no small part to all who took part in it and to be greatly celebrated.
On a less placatory note I see that no one commented on Mgill's point on page 3 "I have no idea whom most of the members are on this Forum, hiding behind
their pseudonyms^ Why do so many feel the need to be anonymous.? You certainly dont sound as if you lack conviction. I notice that many of you who are also on the Gaughan Forum do use recognisable names de rigueur there of course.
Ken McNaughton.

Hi Ken, how's it going? Sheena Wellington (I don't think that's ever been much of a secret, by the way!)

”Get the pints in Boula2”

I shall have a great night JockStrat, me buying you 2 pints, and you buying me around 10!
Maybe 1.5 pints actually, Fiddle_it, may I suggest is being kind, Aly would have to go some to be in that league. Aly is a good fiddler, no debate there, just not on the terms of your statement.

No! You're not allowed to guess otherwise you get hell from Elizabeth like I did a few weeks ago for slightly hinting at who she might be! Boula2 has been the subject of a few conversations though, whoever he or she is. There's a place in Uist called Buaile Dubh so some creative soul thought that's where the name might come from - but we know how b2 hates the bastardising of Gaelic words so I'm not sure! Maybe he's a robot.

Boula2 - if we all put bids in for charity to total £1000, would you reveal your identity and give me a dance?

nic a' phlutes...that's a big chance you're taking asking for a dance without knowing who boula2 is?

He might be a big hairy choochter...or She might be a wee Glesga hairy...

Do you think the time has come for all to reveal their real identities in time for Christmas?

He might be a 6 foot hunk of stuff, and considering he is so careful with his money, I reckon he's loaded. Yippee! I don't mind if he's a she either. LOL ;-)

Nic - you are going to get your bottom smacked………………… (time and place?) :-)

“Boula2 has been the subject of a few conversations”

Your statement beggars belief Nic …….from YOU….. a media dream :-)
Heavens ! I will say no more.

I have no interest in identity on here, mine OR anyone else who posts here. The subject matter is debate and information on various subjects, who are behind the posts is not of concern, as is the case in every forum I have ever viewed.

Some do choose to identify themselves, fine if they so wish but certainly makes no difference to me on here. It was interesting to note recently, Auldtimer and Nic for example, felt obliged (pressurised/embarrassed into by an inquisitive poster? I hope not) revealing who they were.
I had a good idea anyway who auldtimer was, however much as I respect her in the day job, who she is, (to me on here ) is the anonymous auldtimer.
I did not include you in the day job scenario Nic, as you revealed you currently do not have one, and destitute on the streets of Glasgow with only a can of Beans :-)
You Nic perhaps need the £1000 more than me !

“A very good question and one which deserves an answer.....”
Surprised at your statement - again - JAJ , your temperament has changed so much in recent times I oft wonder if the same person is behind the JAJ. I shall survey the fence wire for clues :-)

Nic my Pas de bas is an innovation and I would be delighted to dance with you, and at no charge.

For you and me….. there can be only one………………… The Last Tango In Harris !

It might be a cold spell outside but it's getting warm on this thread.

All I can say is that I look forward to the being best man... or bridesmaid at Boula2 and nic a' phlutes wedding.

Maybe Aly could play at the wedding reception? That would be nice!

Aly's rubbish, I've already said Bruce is my favourite! Only the best for boula2's wedding! And I don't like chicken at a wedding - cheap rubbish! Give me a good bit of flank and potato soup any day.

Yes, £1000 would be very useful!

At my time of life, boula2, I am rarely embarrassed! My ID was never much of a secret on here and I just wanted to wave to Ken who is a friend of many years standing!
