Posted: 02-Mar-2007 08:46 Latest sighting in this week's Big Issue, in a preview of Salsa Celtica and Moishe's Bagel, of all people. The writer wittily states: 'Roots music might largely be the possession of Arran [sic] sweater-wearing ale-swillers, but there are plenty of artists breathing new life and energy into the genre.' Anyone spotted any others recently? |

Posted: 02-Mar-2007 15:51 Gawd not again! The last one I saw was last year in the Guardian about the Folk Brittania programmes. Their Arts and Media Correspondent no less wrote. 'Britain's ancient musical heritage has traditionally been a source of considerable embarrassment to the young and hip. Spain has bright red dresses and flamenco; Brazil has samba and thongs; we have, er, morris dancing and Aran sweaters. Folk music is simply not cool - but that could be changing'. |

Posted: 08-Mar-2007 13:37 Several in an ottoman at the foot of the bed: all knitted by.......ME! A labour of love indeed, that;s why I can't bear to throw them away, but can't remember when I last wore one (except as a folkie joke!) |

Posted: 09-Mar-2007 06:20 Ok, so 'Arran' sweaters are now passe for folkies. But what about the other bit - 'ale-swillers'? Hmmm. Guilty as charged, I suspect. Guinness swillers possibly. Incidentally, what do folkies now wear if not 'Arran' sweaters? |

Posted: 09-Mar-2007 13:15 Just the usual lazy journalism then? Although the recent article in last week's Sunday Herald was informative (and had good pictures) it was the usual 'Folk's answer to...(insert unlikely comparison here). Although I am English, I gave up on the english folk scene years ago. It's very difficult to support a nations so-called traditional music when the nation itself has no tangible links to it's own sense of heritage. Unlike Scotland of course which is the complete opposite. It's always refreshing to me that so many young people play traditional music in Scotland these days. I say that from the fact that so many young bands pass through our portals of a Tuesday. When I go home all I see are those who lament the passing of the early 70's where folk was fashionably (albeit briefly) and have trod the same format since. With a couple of notable exceptions neither artist nor audience have moved forward since. What annoys me most is this idea that Folk should be seen as fashionable or unfashionable, I mean who cares? There are only 2 types of music in my book, good & bad. I wish that editors would send journos/reviews who actually gave a monkey's to gigs then we wouldn't get all this crap publicity. |

Posted: 10-Mar-2007 20:08 Aran, please (as in the Aran islands off the west coast of Ireland). I used to have green corduroy flares with a cream coloured fringe round the bottom hem - well it matched the jumper! |

Posted: 17-Aug-2007 10:49 Peter MacMahon (at Cropredy Fest) writing in today's Scotsman: Folk songs strike a chord as the English struggle to find identity THERE weren't as many beards as there used to be. A few tie-dyed T-shirts, but they were fighting a losing battle to cover once slim bodies grown affluently plump. |
