James S Kerr (1841-1893) established his music publishing company in 1863. He was the most prolific publisher of his day. He published the popular dance repertoire of his time (in Kerr's Collections) and the output of his company continued for a century. Kerr's Collections embraced all the succeeding stars of the music world including Jimmy Shand, Andy Stewart, Robert Wilson, Jimmy Blair, Ian Powrie and more. Among his most enduring music books and those known to generations of aspiring fiddlers are the collections of 'Merry Melodies For The Violin', each consisting of around 445 reels, strathspeys, hornpipes, jigs, marches and airs.
