Folk can be fun - in fact it very often is, but rarely is full-on enjoyment mixed with such fine playing as on le bordel by the midden. Three Reids, Kate, Meggan and Hazel, on guitar, violin and whistle, join forces with fiddler Karen Hannah as well as guests Duncan Lyall on bass and Martin O'Neill on percussion to produce a tremendous collection of original songs (often with deft lyrical touches), traditional faves such as The Dark Island and a couple of songs by stars such as Hamish Imlach..... while the midden engage with the clichés of Celtic traditionalism, they do so in a worthwhile and highly listenable manner.

Review:
THE MIDDEN le bordel *** Argh! Corrs alert! the midden are a Scottish fiddle-toting four piece featuring three sisters and an odd one out. Luckily, they're not as cursed by MOR pop as the glamourous Irish clan and, from the looks of the album sleeve, they're not as ridiculously over made-up either. Instead Kate, Hazel and Meggan Reid and Karen Hannah combine their own songwriting with pre-existing arrangements and take care to acknowledge the importance of crazy French chicks and toilet roll in their musical endeavour. Black is the colour is the album's mournful, melodic high point and, while the midden engage with the clichés of Celtic traditionalism, they do so in a worthwhile and highly listenable manner.
