What Road?

by Session A9

A superb collection of thirteen tracks played with some style by these oh so talented instrumentalists. The album swings along and  the musicians are obviously enjoying themselves. Mixed in with the traditional tracks are several contributions from the pen of Charlie McKerron as well as a few from Gordon Gunn and the lively Finlay MacDonald composition "Greek Street." And Kris Drever is developing as one of the most notable traditional singers on the scene today. A very fine album indeed.

Charlie MacKerron -   fiddle, percussion
Duncan Chisholm -     fiddle
Kris Drever -              vocals, guitar, mandolin
Tim Edey -                 guitar, melodeon
Gordon Gunn -           fiddle
Brian McAlpine -         keyboards
Adam Sutherland -    fiddle
Ewen Vernal -            bass
David 'Chimp' Robertson - percussion
Michael McGoldrick -   bodhran

Review: A sort of 'green' record this: a major recycling project taking fiddlers from Capercaillie, Wolfstone, Croft No. Five, GG from the Gordon Gunn Band and an equivalent rhythm section of keys, squeeze box, percussion, guitar and acoustic bass from the likes of Fine Friday, Blazin Fiddles, and Iron Horse. There's even Michael McGoldrick on bodhran. Smoothly played and cleanly produced, this is much more than a casual session - the album nods towards Donal Lunny's recent instrumental Irish excursions and, in 'Shady Groves', a song heard on an Appalachian Freeway.
