Monthly news summary of all the happenings and up and coming events in the Scottish Traditional Music scene.
This is a grand collection of songs gleaned mainly from Mairi Nic a' Ghobhainn's (Mary Smith) own home region of Ness on the Hebridean Island of Lewis. She is a very fine singer indeed and it has been a treat to listen to her on disc for the first time. Several of the songs will be familiar to those who listen to music of this genre, but Mary Smith imbues them with something special - it's as if one was hearing them as they would have sounded in centuries past. Fascinating! A long overdue album from one of Gaeldom's best singers.
Produced by Iain MacDonald, the guest musicians are: Malcolm Stitt - guitar, cittern: Ingrid Henderson - clarsach, keyboards, backing vocals: Aidan O'Rourke - fiddle: Iain MacDonald - pipes, flute, whistles, bodhran, jaws harp: Allan MacDonald / Kathleen MacInnes / Catriona MacKinnon - backing vocals.
