Back Tae Burns (double CD)

by Ian Burns

Ian Burns - Back Tae Burns (double CD): Although best known as a composer, Ian (1932-1995)was a talented multi-instrumentalist whose range included fiddle, guitar, piano, mandolin, bagpipes and drums. Indeed, he recorded his tune collection on a multi-track recorder, playing all the various instruments himself.  In 2001 Ian's daughter June got the cassettes (titled Spootiskerry, Sunnyside and The Laebrak.) made into a wonderful Double CD, a tremendous collection of Shetland tunes written and played by Ian Burns.  Many of these tunes like 'Spootiskerry' are now Shetland standards, but gain extra meaning when you hear them played  by Ian multi-tracking on fiddle, guitar, bagpipes, piano, mandolin and drums.  It is fine tribute that Shetland Arts are publishing Ian's fabulous tunes as part of their Fiddle Frenzy Collections and Volume One (of three)  "Back Tae Burns Part 1" is now available.
