The Glasgow Orpheus Choir: The one and only Glasgow Orpheus and a CD of lovely music made from an original early1950s recording. Such beautiful singing starting off with a spell-binding version of the hymn 'Belmont' (By Cool Siloam) followed by the classic Robert Burns love song Ae Fond Kiss. This wonderful choir was founded in 1901 and was disbanded in 1951. It started in a Working Men's Club, and over the 50 years of its life it had only the one conductor Sir Hugh Roberton. Wherever it went the Orpheus was welcomed and acclaimed. And it went far, giving regular concerts in England and Ireland as well as at home. And it might well have gone further (and done more) but for the fact that its work was trisected and interrupted by major devastating wars. As it was, its itinerary (in the years of its being) embraced six European countries as well as the USA and Canada. The whole point of the Orpheus was that it reached the heart of the people everywhere, and this, probably because it always sang from the heart as well as the mind. There may be a few slight imperfections associated with the age of the original material, but we have tried to make the sound quality of the CD as clear and crisp as possible. We hope that you will agree with us that the quality of the music still shines through.
