Monthly news summary of all the happenings and up and coming events in the Scottish Traditional Music scene.
The project was inspired partly by the comprehensive book The Songs of Robert Burns by James C. Dick, published in 1903. The author meticulously sets the historical and social context of Burns' work, and re-connects his lyrics to the melodies that Burns had intended. This CD presents airs and dance tunes that were popular in Scotland during the latter half of the 18th century, many of which inspired the songs of Scotland's most famous poet Robert Burns.
Internationally renowned fiddler Alasdair Fraser and Muriel Johnstone (piano) have been playing Scottish dance music together for years, while Natalie Haas (cello) recently combined with Alasdair on the album Fire and Grace.

|Review:||ALASDAIR Fraser and his collaborators concentrate on music for fiddle, piano and cello from the time of Robert Burns in this album. It often reflects a chamber music rather than folk feel, especially on the slow and mid-tempo material. That is doubtless an accurate reflection of the ethos of the late 18th century, when musicians crossed freely from society recitals to country dances. Familiar tunes like Afton Water and Rattlin’ Roarin’ Willie stand alongside more obscure items in the 60-odd tunes they get through.
