This little booklet was written to compliment the CD in the Scottish Tradition series "The Fiddler and his Art" and covers fiddling in the five different regions of Scotland.
Fascinating information on such players as John Reid of Newtyle in Angus (1869 - 1942). Known as 'Dancie' Reid, he was the last of the old fiddler-dancing masters. Through his long working life he travelled around the vale of Angus and parts of Perthshire teaching a variety of country, Highland and social dances as well as deportment and etiquette. There are frames taken from a film which show that not only could he fiddle and dance simultaneously to demonstrate intricate Highland dance cuts, but could switch to a mirror form of his stepping according to whether he faced his class or turned his back to lead it.
The Scottish Tradition Series consists of a selection of material previously held in the archives of Edinburgh University's School of Scottish Studies and collected by the School over 40 years.
